Insight Triggers

I recently had the opportunity to view myself on video tape in the roles of victim and victor. I was part of a peer group co-counseling workshop in which I would be the client one time and the therapist the next time. I threw myself into each role, going deep to pull up a meaningful reality for the video camera. What astounded me as I watched the tape later was the all-too-real difference between my two states of being. In one segment I was the victim, with bent posture and foggy vision. I was unable to answer even a simple question and seemed in a state of suspended animation. I was such an excellent victim that I winced at the reality. I was seeing a truth, and it was eye-opening, to say the least. In the second segment I was the opposite, full of life and enthusiasm, laughing, witty and confident. I was well dressed and exuded competence. Was that me—this person, acting out two completely different belief systems? I saw myself go from victim to victor, with such believability, it was amazing and scary. Can it be this easy in life to reverse a way of being, simply by taking another point of view?

Beliefs above, Beliefs below,
Beliefs all around, they have a life of their own.
They all have a source,
They all make a course.
One of the greatest powers alone,
Is to make a belief and call it my own.

I was buying into the martyr complex and putting everyone else’s needs, wants and whims above my own. It made no difference if I was inconvenienced or taken advantage of, I allowed it to happen over and over—believing I was being unselfish. Refusing to experience and eliminate my own stuff, while focusing all my attention on others was leading to an emotional quagmire. I initially felt that The Avatar Course was selfish because it cost a lot of money. That money could be used for other things to benefit other people. Who was I to spend that much money on an exploration of myself?

I want and want and want, then laugh at the absurdity!
What is the mystery?

Through sharing The Avatar Course, it is my joy to celebrate the recovery of the memory that we decided to pretend to forget. The most empowering thing you will ever do for yourself is to recover this awareness.

What you believe you see is what you get. Two friends are sitting together at the beach. Both experience the sand, salt air, sea breeze and sun. One loves the beach and is savoring every moment; the other hates the beach and is absolutely miserable.

When I was very young I did something. Before I could really understand what it was, I was sentenced for life to the right-and-wrong prison.

“There’s nothing out there—it’s all happening on the back of your eyeballs.” Dr. Irving Oyle, noted Doctor of Osteopathy and teacher at the University of California, made this statement in a talk given in Asheville, North Carolina.
