Snakes Alive

by Joy Waterman

Since early childhood I have felt one with nature and have been aware of the many lessons nature could and has taught me over some fifty years.

Two of the most powerful lessons I became aware of at a very early age were:

1. That nature is simple, effortless and natural.

2. That if I have an intention that excites me I will achieve it effortlessly.

The feeling at these times is indescribable. Perhaps a feeling of upliftment, lightness, all powerful, without definition or identity. A feeling of one with all, BEING SOURCE.

I must have been about seven years old when I became acutely conscious of being absolutely terrified of snakes and spiders. Much as I resisted them, they always seemed to be in my environment, Some of my best friends agreed that my fear attracted them. I felt there was nothing I could do about it. I was helpless, a victim, an angry victim. An interesting side effect was that I was always attracting people into my environment to protect me from danger. In fact, if I knew there was a snake or spider anywhere in sight, I would panic and leave.

I remember thinking, “This is ridiculous. This is paranoia!” I decided, “Enough! I do not wish to continue in this direction.”

Later in applying one of the Avatar techniques in the safe space of the course, I allowed myself to fully experience what I was feeling. I had no idea what I had accomplished until my attention was caught by a display of snakes and spiders in a local shopping center. After I looked at them, I realized I felt different as I enjoyed and explored that new feeling. The next thing I touched was a python that was draped around the snake handler’s neck. I was amazed. I asked if I could hold it. I felt an immediate affinity with this beautiful creature.

I looked over at my husband and a friend who couldn’t believe what was going on and calmly said, “I used to be scared of these.” I felt like a person recalling a distant memory.
