I Found Love In the Nick of Time

by Pamela Ziemann

It was a beautiful sunny morning, and I had just warmed up my favorite cup of tea. I was anticipating a relaxing morning of being still and introspective. Just as I positioned myself in my favorite chair, I heard the bass of the stereo next door. I tried to keep my attention on what I set out to do, but the more I tried not to listen, the louder the stereo got. All I heard was the loud vibration of Boom... Ba Boom, Boom...Ba Boom. No voices, no melody, just the sub woofer doing its job to full capacity. “Oh brother,” I thought to myself. “They’re at it again.” My mind started to remember times in the past when the same scenario had gone on for hours and hours. I could feel the mind chatter begin. Things like, “They are really obnoxious” and “They only care about themselves.”

Then I realized what I was allowing to take place in my mind and wondered, “What would I tell someone else to do in this case?” And it came to me. Get a new perspective. So I did just that. I went out to the middle of my deck and heard the music from a different angle. From this point, the bass faded into the background and the beautiful voice of Bonnie Raitt was all I heard. Smooth and flowing. The music permeated the summer air with creative talent. It happened to be her Grammy Award winning song Nick of Time. I hadn’t heard that song in years, and it sounded more wonderful than ever. As I glanced over the fence, I saw my neighbor planting flowers. And at that moment Bonnie sang the lyric, “I found love, love in the nick of time.” Wow! This feeling of humility, peace and love swept through my body, and I smiled.

We get lessons in the simplest of ways if we are open to hearing them. If my attention had stayed fixed on my original viewpoint, “They’re loud and obnoxious,” I would have never heard the song. How symbolic this is of how our lives can be. If our attention is fixed on the negative things, those things can get louder and louder until that’s all we hear. We can get so absorbed in it that we miss the beauty life has to offer.

The ability to change viewpoints and free attention is one of the many tools students receive just after the first day of the Avatar Course. You can deliberately choose where you want to place your attention. Can you imagine the personal peace and sense of power this will bring to your life? As you continue the course, you’ll be introduced to techniques that can have an even greater effect on your consciousness. You may have heard the phrase, “Create the reality you prefer.” Well, this is where it all starts! Are you ready for the challenge?
