The Military Mind Of An Avatar Candidate

by Lt. Col. (Ret) Jerry Bearce

Reading Living Deliberately and ReSurfacing by Harry Palmer caused me to ponder the author’s incredible intellect as I attempted to grasp his simple models of truth, happiness, creativity, etc. Filling the borders on page after page were my written comments. Arcane expressions such as, “Huh?” “help!” “more study” “?” “yeah, right!” Then on a subsequent reading, notes like, “yes!” “of course” “got it!” and “yeah, right!”

With my measured reasoning came a smile to my face and a swagger in my gait (Marines never bounce when they walk, but they have been known to swagger) and guess what? A desire to read the books once more. What also evolved was an undeniable urge to attend an Avatar Course, so as to hear the Awakening Masters and those of us who seek to be awakened ourselves. Because of my study of the Avatar materials, I feel better prepared to take the course now than I would have felt had I attended without such preliminary preparation. Perhaps this is a lesson for other beautiful dreamers who, like me, are card-carrying overachievers.

I found myself paraphrasing entire paragraphs so that I might express in my own words the concepts advanced. This same technique was utilized when, as an actor, I personalized the writer’s words so as to accelerate memorization and understanding. This led to a more believable interpretation of the meaning intended (acting skills: what teacher Palmer calls “deliberate pretending”). It was also helpful for me to cross reference the many buzz words that appear throughout the two texts (sometimes with subtle differences).

Aha, I’m catching on, Harry. I’m going to get there yet!

The process that I undertook alone was slow, but enjoyable. Again, I was thrilled with the prospect of enrolling in the course so that I could benefit from the reinforcement provided. I would alternately read Living Deliberately and ReSurfacing; this enabled me to acquire a better feel for the material presented as I connected the written words with my real-life experiences/beliefs.

What a mammoth work; what a head-turning labor of love—thanks, Harry.

For the sake of explanation, some of the terms that initially gave me difficulty were “duality,” “essential self,” “subatomic/physical particle,” and “separation” (as it applies to self and the universe). Then there was the cryptic sidebar on page 104 of ReSurfacing:

You experience what you believe, unless you believe you won’t, in which case you don’t, which means you did.

Hello?

Now I have “Yes! Yes! Yes!” inscribed indelibly next to these words.

As a military retiree who has traveled the world in both peace and war, it is not difficult for me to recognize our need for the creation of an enlightened planetary civilization. It is my utmost desire to one day apply the Avatar materials toward this lofty but attainable goal.
