My Car Never Drives Me Anywhere

by Linda Decker

Imagine that you and a friend are having coffee together one day when she says to you, “Y’know, I spent a lot of money on that new Ferrari, and now the darn thing never drives me anywhere!”

What would you say to her—I mean after you were done with the blank stare? Suppose you ask her, “Well, did you get in it and turn the ignition key?” And she replies, “No, but that’s not the point. The salesman said it’d do zero to sixty in five seconds! And yet, I haven’t been anywhere in months! Boy, have I got a few choice words for that dealership!”

People sometimes ask if doing the Avatar training guarantees that they will always live the reality they dream of. They want to know if all Avatar graduates experience flawless lives after the course has concluded. As one particularly honest person asked me, “Are you happy all the time?”

Yes, Avatar graduates can create uninterrupted bliss for themselves. And it’s understandable that you’d want to enjoy this state for a time. You may have been seeking it all of your life! After a while, you may become a bit bored with floating around on clouds, savoring peeled grapes. I grant you, it might be a long while. Still, when that moment comes, powerful creators sometimes choose to engage in more interesting lessons—they hunger for challenging puzzles to play with. Life isn’t about resisting all negativity. It’s about being fully present in the moment to feel its incredible tapestry of experience.

I met an interesting man recently who was angry at the people he’d taken a speed-reading course from, because he was not currently choosing to speed read. Frankly, it was hard for me to share his righteous indignation over that one, but it did bring home a point for me: as an Avatar Master, it’s not appropriate for me to see to it that my graduates take or avoid any particular action after their course is concluded. That, in Avatar terms, would be tantamount to “assuming Source” for their lives—being a control freak, robbing them of the right to choose their own road.

You are free to set the Avatar tools aside and never use them again, if that’s what you’d like to do. It’s hard to believe that someone with the keys to a Ferrari would never start it and drive it around, but, yes, it does happen. There are no Avatar Police who monitor whether or not you create the reality you’d prefer and discreate the unpleasant experiences in your life. You’ll be set confidently on your own two legs with powerful tools to use as you like—even if that means letting them sit idle. You decide.

There’s nothing hard about living as an Avatar—it’s effortless and natural! Some people, perhaps remembering past experiences when they tried to adopt a new habit by brute force of willpower, cringe at their own assumption that extreme effort will be required. Strictly speaking, Avatar is not something you do. It’s ceasing to do a lot of difficult, complicated, self-sabotaging things. You relax into it. Avatar is a state of being: simpler, clearer, more effortless and peaceful than the usual state most adults live in (stressed out, confused, distracted, mired in judgments, yearning for things just out of their grasp, barely surviving, resisting one situation after another). This “normal” state of being is like pushing a stalled car along the shoulder of the highway.

Resistance takes an awesome amount of effort, and can actually be painful, either emotionally or physically. It’s not life’s challenges that are hurting us; it’s the stress and dis-ease created by the resistance and judgment we place on them.

Avatar grads sometimes deliberately decide to get out and push, and that’s not only okay, it’s expected. The key here is that it’s deliberate. The only way to avoid ever experiencing any variety is to carefully focus on little, teeny goals that do not upset the status quo. Some call this staying in their comfort zone. When you decide to stretch yourself and grow, there’ll be some construction debris around for a short while as you move through expansion.

Avatars are a courageous bunch, and they appreciate the life lessons expansion brings, rather than resisting them. They know Masters welcome them to stay in touch and let us know how it’s going. If asked, we’re willing to be nonjudgmental mirrors for them as they map their way. This is both a selfless service—giving a fellow creator a hand up the ladder— and a selfish service—we are anticipating the emergence of an even stronger, more capable companion.

And, we’re ready to play again when they are! Touch the key, fire up life like a high-spirited Ferrari and ease on up to speed. Take your foot off the brakes, and relax into the power. Feel the effortless purr. Be as you were designed to be! Appreciate life’s landscape and curves like you were taking a fine automobile down a newly discovered road. The handling is solid; you’re confident, curious and filled with excitement. You’re ready to let the road unfold before you, eagerly observing it all with fresh eyes. Feel the effortless purr...
